Lake Neusiedl – 115 m sea level, 33,5 km long, 12 km wide, 1,8m deep, approximately 285,2 km2 (including the reed belt), of which 220 km2 are in Austria. Evaporation causes high salinity and is important to balance the temperature espacially in summer. Lake Neusiedl is surrounded by the Leitha Mountains in the north-west, the Parndorf plate in the north-east, the Rust hills in the west and the Seewinkel in the east. In the south thers's a small fen, and in the south-east the former fen Hanság (Waasen), which has been dried up by the "Einser"-channel.
The most important branches are viniculture, tourism, the reed and fishery. The water level of Lake Neusiedl is mainly infuenced by rainfall. But also small rivers and creeks like Wulka, Wolfsbrunnbach and Angersbach as well as subterraneaous waters. The "Einser"-channel is the only possibility to let water flow out of the Lake in order to keep the water level constant.
The reed belt has been growing constantly since the beginning of the 20th century and covers about 100 km2 today only in Austria. At its broadest point at the west shore near Donnerskirchen it is about 5 km wide. Besides of being a chance of earning money for the residents, the reed belt is habitat for more than 250 species of bird, especially shorebirds and waterbirds. The lake itself is habitat for more than 30 species of fish, like eel, carp, zander, or pike.
Lake Neusiedl is the touristic center of Burgenland, as about 2/3 of the overnight stays occur in the region around the lake. Due to the high water quality and it's quite shallow water Lake Neusiedl is perfekt for swimming. But also offers other water sport possibilities as well as a ramified bicycle lane network around the entire lake. And those interested in culture can visit operettas at the "Seefestspiele Mörbisch" or the opera festival in St. Margarethen.
The sunny Pannonian climate and the lake as temperature balance make the region lay the foundations for successful viniculture. Since the branche has been growing especially east of the lake. Today the vineyards have become synonymous with the whole region, as you can find them all around Lake Neusiedl.
The National Park Neusiedler See-Seewinkel has been founded in 1993 in co-operation with Hungary. In 2001 the region became UNESCO World Heritage.
